Made in Canada: Breakfast with a Whole New Generation of Designers

By now you will all know Jeremy Laing, but there are other designers north of Niagara Falls too. Bright and early this past Monday at Holt Renfrew on Bloor Street in Toronto, the store invited a coterie of young talents to show three of their fall 2010 looks at a breakfast for a select group of Canadian press—and gave one New York-based British interloper, i.e. me, the opportunity to get a glimpse of what’s going on in the other North America.

Those designers would be: Torontonians Mikhael Kale, Greta Constantine (actually a duo of Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong), and the aforementioned Laing. Denis Gagnon, he of the heavy black eyeglasses and the Patrick Demarchelier-like French accent, had flown in from his native Montreal, where he is based. The final designer, Lida Baday, showed but didn’t show: She was ill, so couldn’t sit in on the forum where the designers chewed the fat with Barbara Atkin, Holt Renfrew’s vice president of fashion direction, and Fashion Television Channel’s Jeanne Beker. Rachel Roy at The Bay Toronto

Rachel Roy and I pictured above.

Yesterday my friend and I headed down to the Bay on Queen St, Toronto.  To check out the Rachel Roy New York and Rachel Roy Signature collections which is only available at The Bay  , and of course we got to meet Rachel Roy herself.

The Rachel Roy signature collection is a contemporary collection with pieces that a women can wear in the office and then add a great necklace or clutch purse and head out to a upscale party.  The collection price range is ($225-$775).

The RACHEL Rachel Roy collection is for a younger women, with African inspired prints, chiffon, short jumpers and military influenced jackets the prince range is ($18-$299)

I was able to ask Rachel a quick question in regards to working with Chanel Iman over the weekend at the L.E.I Model Citizen Search and she said " Chanel Iman is a model who's a very determined young female, and has a great work ethic for someone her age and will go very far in the fashion industry"

Tenika Davis was one of the models at the event.  Tenika was on the 1st cycle of Canada's Next Top Model, she is currently doing modeling and acting gigs and is signed with Ford Modeling agency and hopes to make a name for herself in the industry.  Tenika is from North of Toronto and is of Trinidad descent, her favorite models are Liya Kebede and Chanel Iman.  Her advice to females wanting to become a model is stay strong and have lots of confidence in yourself.

"Rachel Roy has come to the Bay! Rachel Rachel Roy is a new addition to her great portfolio of brands, Rachel Roy New York and Rachel Roy Signature. The Rachel Rachel Roy collection captures a fresh and youthful look by mixing elements of downtown cool with uptown chic – all at affordable price points.

Rachel Roy is a fashion designer, businesswoman, philanthropist and mother; she has seen every side of the fashion industry. She is widely perceived as one of the most refined women in fashion today with a background and story that makes her instantly "  source

The National Ballet of Canada | The Nutcracker

Last night I braved the cold weather again to watch the The Nutcracker at the Canadian Opera House. I've always wanted to see the Nutcracker on stage since it has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies. It was a beautiful production, amazing costumes, and overall a great show. My favorite part of the show was the "Land of Snow", it felt like winter wonderland coming to life.

King Tut: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs | AGO Art Gallery of Ontario

Photo of Anubis outside of AGO taken by Tiffany
Today my friend and I braved the cold weather and went to see the King Tut exhibit taking place at the Art Gallery of Ontario in downtown Toronto. And it was just wonderful, I really wish I was allowed to take photos but due to the preservation of artifacts it's not allowed. The exhibit showcases 130 remarkable pieces from the tomb of King Tut and ancient sites representing some of the most important rulers throughout 2,000 years of ancient Egyptian history.

The exhibit is running until April 18th, 2010 so make sure you take the time and see it if you live in Toronto , or will be visiting Toronto within the next few months.

Tutankhamun (alternately spelled with Tutenkh-, -amen, -amon), Egyptian twt-ˁnḫ-ı͗mn; tVwa:t-ʕa:nəx-ʔaˡma:n (1341 BC – 1323 BC) was anEgyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled 1333 BC – 1324 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". Often the name Tutankhamun was written Amen-tut-ankh, due to scribal custom which most often placed the divine name at the beginning of the phrase in order to honor the divine being. He is possibly also the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters. He was likely the 18th dynastyking 'Rathotis' who, according to Manetho, an ancient historian, had reigned for nine years — a figure which conforms with Flavius Josephus's version of Manetho's Epitome.

The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun's intact tomb received worldwide press coverage and sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's burial mask remains the popular face. Read more here
