The man also injured a female Chinese tour guide before leaping to his death around noon from the second floor of the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist site, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
The USOC said the two Americans were family members of a coach for the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team. No other information about them was released.
The attacker was a 47-year-old man from the eastern Chinese city Hangzhou, a spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office told Xinhua.Georgia declares state of war with Russia
Georgia declared a state of war Saturday as fierce battles with Russia military over the breakaway region of South Ossetia entered their second day.
Russia has launched a full-scale military invasion of Georgia, President Mikhail Saakashvili said during a brief news conference Saturday afternoon.
"We are dealing with absolutely criminal and crazy acts of irresponsible and reckless decision makers, which is on the ground producing dramatic and tragic consequences," Saakashvili said.
Saakashvili compared the Russian invasion, which he called unprovoked, to the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
President George W. Bush called for an immediate halt to the fighting saying the United States is "deeply concerned."
Notice how a President has the power to cease fire in war in another country, but does not do it when genocide takes place in Africa to indigenous men , women and children who are dying daily. Thought I would point that out to people.
