Quadruplets Accepted to Yale

Suddenly the screen turned blue — Yale blue — and an image of a bulldog, the university mascot, appeared, followed by “Welcome to the Class of 2014.” Ray, 18, had been offered a spot in the next freshman class, under its early-admission program. Standing behind him, his mother, Caroline, screamed.

But that was only the beginning. Moments later, Ray’s brother, Kenny, also 18, went to the Yale site and got an identical message. He was followed by their sister Carol. Same news. Then the room fell silent. Ray, Kenny and Carol are quadruplets, and their sister Martina had applied to Yale, too. Read more here.

Trent University Offers Free Tuition for Students

Trent University has announced an exciting new incentive program, offering free tuition for
first-year students with an entering average of 90% or higher, to recruit the best and brightest
young students.

Eligible students will receive a $5,000 scholarship, equivalent to the cost of tuition, if they
accept their offer of admission to Trent for the fall.

"Given the economic challenges facing Canadian families, we feel that this will be a good
incentive to assist top high school scholars pay for their costs of the education,” said
Christopher Michael, Trent University registrar and director of Institutional Research.

To qualify, students must be either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, who is
attending a post-secondary institution for the first time, directly from a Canadian high school,
and entering with an average of 90% and above for the 2009-10 academic year. Students
must also be registering at Trent with a full course load of at least five credits.

The scholarship is renewable. If students maintain an average of at least 80% in five full
credits, or equivalent, each year they are at Trent, they could be eligible to receive up to
$14,000 in scholarships over four years.

Ron Eglash: African Fractals in Buildings and Braids

Ron Eglash is an ethno-mathematician: he studies the way math and cultures intersect. He has shown that many aspects of African design -- in architecture, art, even hair braiding -- are based on perfect fractal patterns.

When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganized and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn't even discovered yet. -- Ron Eglash, Mathematician

Winfrey collects honorary degree, speaks at Duke

Oprah Winfrey talked about courage, making wise choices and helping others during a commencement address Sunday at Duke University, which gave her an honorary degree.
During her 25-minute speech beneath overcast skies, the talk show host told the 4,400 graduates and their guests that "one of the best ways to enhance your own life is to enhance somebody else's" and to "stand proudly in your own shoes while you help others stand in theirs."
"How can I help somebody else move to higher ground? That is success. That's it. That's why we're all alive," she said.

Tony Hansberry II Developed New Way to Sew Up Patients

Tony Hansberry II is a ninth-grader pictured above

Tony Hansberry II is a ninth-grader who, as it happens, will be presenting his findings today before an auditorium filled with doctors just like any of his board-certified - and decades older - colleagues would. He would say he was following in the footsteps of "Doogie Howser, M.D." - if he weren't too young to have heard of the television show.Instead, he says that his remarkable accomplishments are merely steps toward his ultimate goal of becoming a University of Florida-trained neurosurgeon.

"I just want to help people and be respected, knowing that I can save lives," said Tony, the son of a registered nurse mom and an African Methodist Episcopal church pastor dad.To be sure, he had some help along the way, but, then again, most researchers do. The seeds of his project were planted last summer during his internship at the University of Florida's Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research, based at Shands Jacksonville.

To understand why a teenager would be a hospital intern, it's important to know that Tony is a student down the street from Shands at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, a magnet school geared toward all things medical. (Students, for example, master suturing by the eighth grade.)

Mrs. Obama Celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Schoolchildren

Nubian Class Opens for the First Time

In April 2009, TDSB Continuing Education launched the city's first Nubian language and culture class for elementary students. The class, part of International Languages and African Heritage Elementary Programs, is offered on Saturday mornings at Dr. Marion Hilliard Senior Public School in Toronto's east end. This partnership between the TDSB and the Nubian community is historic. The last time the Nubian language was officially taught with the backing of a government was in 1504.

Nubia is the homeland of one of Africa's earliest civilizations with a history tracing back many thousands of years. The Nubians are an ethnic group originally from northern Sudan area. Many are now settled in the East and Northeast parts of Africa including southern Egypt. The Nubian language is a central feature of modern Nubian identity.
