The Garinagu (singular: Garifuna) are an ethnic group of mixed ancestry who live primarily in Central America. They live along the Caribbean Coast in Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras including the mainland, and on the island of Roatán. There are also diaspora communities of Garinagu in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles, Miami, New York and other major cities. The Garinagu are descendants of Carib, Arawak and African people.

I've witnessed Garifuna culture in Belize. There is a big movement to promote Garifuna idenity throughout Central America.

this is so interesting. i had seen the ablum 'The Garifuna Women's Project' by Umalali but because of the woman pictured on the cover i assumed they were West African. thanks so much for this, i would probably have never known otherwise. i'm off to listen to that album now :)
