Wangechi Mutu
Wangechi Mutu (b.1972, Nairobi, Kenya) is an artist who lives and works in New York. She moved to New York in the 1990s to study anthropology and fine art at Cooper Union (BFA, 1996), and Yale University (MFA, 2000).
She creates painted and collaged images of female figures, first painting outline images on PET film, then adding detail with photographic fragments of idealised women collected from print magazines.
The figures generally feature grotesque distortions of form and skin texture, which critics read as commentary on a variety of feminist and racial issues ("of the history of women's representation, of cultural migration, global identity; of a litany of historical violence and destruction; of colonial legacies, exoticism and voyeuristic fascination"). source

Item of the Day

I'm in need of a new bed but I also need one with storage options since I live in a condo (space is limited). I found a really nice once with side storage, but way over my budget.

Urban Living : Patio Makeover
"Adding colorful throw pillows to your outdoor furnishings is a good way to bring some zest to your summertime retreat.A bit of natural greenery is always a welcomed touch too. Keep in mind that lounging there can be just as enjoyable at night as it is during the day, so a few candles (maybe citronella to ward off bugs) are a good idea as well." Source

Global Influences: Searching the world over for design inspiration
Photo courtesy of salInteriorsDecking out your home with globally inspired housewares can be a daunting task. Everything from furniture and accessories to paint colors and lighting can fit into a globally themed home. It just depends on how far you want to delve into your chosen region of the world.
Whichever theme you choose, plan carefully before you let it take over your home. “Whatever someone’s style is, it is usually seen throughout his or her home, but I think exotic themes tend to be more in accents or in certain but not all rooms of the house,” Thomas says. Using similarly themed accessories throughout your home will give it a nice flow from room to room. And as with any theme, less is often more. Building your global collection one item at a time will help you determine how much is enough, and it may help keep you from spending too much money in one place. “Even the smallest hand-produced artifact from another country can make a statement in anyone’s home,” click here for more tips
