"Negro" means "black" in Spanish, Portuguese, and ancient Italian - all of which derive from the Latin niger (i.e. "black").

Anonymous said...: Negro comes from Latin, not Greek. Niger, in Latin, means black, and so in Portuguese, Spanish and Italian the word for black is negro.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to land in Africa, and they deemed the Africans they came in contact with negros, and so the English followed suit.; February 2, 2009 at 4:30 p.m.

Necro comes from greek,necro-, the Greek prefix meaning death . We keep referring ourselves by labels in which they placed on us and we wonder why they hate black. That is not our NAME. Our fore mothers never named us black.; February 2, 2009 at 5:16 p.m.

But just want to make clear that I'm not disagreeing with your point about rejecting the label "Black." I am just saying that I don't think it's accurate to associate the Latin Niger with the Greek Necro.; February 3, 2009 at 3:55 p.m.
