Quote of The Day

"Knowledge: It makes you into a more valuable person. The more knowledge you have, the more people need you. It's an interesting phenomenon, but when people need you, they pay you, so you'll be okay in life." Dr Benjamin Carson

Black Doc Awarded Medal of Freedom

President Bush on Thursday presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, to leaders in medicine, government, the judiciary and the military.

Bush talked about Dr. Benjamin S. Carson's mother. Carson performed the world's first successful operation separating twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.
Carson's mother raised him and his brother alone.

"Every week the boys would have to check out library books and write reports on them," Bush said of Carson's mother. "She would hand them back with check marks as though she had reviewed them, never letting on that she couldn't read."

Carson is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. attended the ceremony for the 2008 recipients. He will portray Carson in an upcoming movie. source

A birthday celebration!

Nelson Mandela only turns 90 on 18 July, but the celebrations have already started. The year-long occasion will be marked by events ranging from exhibitions, dialogues, book launches and 46664 concerts to the sixth annual Nelson Mandela Lecture.

While Mandela traditionally celebrates his actual birthday with his family in the Eastern Cape, major international events are planned every year in the run-up to the day and after.

"Our focus is on 'a celebration of ideas', and while there will be shows and musical events, they too are aimed assisting our ongoing work in social justice work started by Madiba and the perpetuation of his ideals of freedom, non-racism and gender equality," the Nelson Mandela Foundation said in a recent statement. source
