Today is Haiti Independence Day, Cuba Liberation Day and Sudan National Day

Haiti Independence Day: The native leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines, long an ally of Toussaint Louverture, defeated the French troops led by Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, vicomte de Rochambeau at the Battle of Vertières. At the end of the double battle for emancipation and independence, former slaves proclaimed the independence of Saint-Domingue on 1 January 1804, declaring the new nation as Haiti, honoring the original indigenous Taíno name for the island. Haiti was consequently the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. source
Cuba Liberation Day : The first of the year’s Cuban festivals, occurring on January 1st. All over the country, Cubans take to the streets, with enormous street parties held in every city and town. In Havana, this day is celebrated with outdoor concerts and other events. source

Sudan National Day: The newly elected Sudanese government led by the first prime minister Ismail Al-Azhari, went ahead with the process of Sudanisation of the state's government, with the help and supervision of an international committee. Independence was duly granted and on January 1, 1956, in a special ceremony held at the People's Palace where the Egyptian and British flags were lowered and the new Sudanese flag, composed of green, blue and white stripes, was raised in their place. source

Drum roll please.... I would like to announce that I won the 2008 Grande Distinction Award (aka employee of the year) @ work. I was a bit surprised that I won, then I remembered all the hard work, headaches and finger pains I get for all the hard work that I do on a daily basis. I would also like to congratulate my co-worker who sits right beside me, she won also and she also won the trip to Mexico (Yes the trip is free and paid for by the bank).

My 2nd Year Anniversary of Owning a Home

2 years ago today I received the keys to my own home. It took 2 years a lot of budgeting and discipline to not spend any money so that I could save for a downpayment. Then I looked at about 8 condos in total before making my final choice and placing an offer. The rest is history.

To date I still have not fully decorated my place, I've kept it very simple, but that will change after this winter. I want to upgrade and put in hardwood or laminate flooring, so I can have a nice colourful rug. Upgrade my counter tops to marble and change the colour of my cabit doors to a darker wood.

Below are some tips on purchasing a home.
