"Drogba, 32, a striker for England's Chelsea Football Club and the captain of the Côte d'Ivoire team, has shown the world what's possible when power and grace fuse on the soccer pitch. Imagine the body of an NBA star with feet as nimble as a prima ballerina's. When the World Cup kicks off in South Africa in June, he will carry the hopes of a continent as Africa's best-known soccer star. (West African fans will toast him with a beer glass called the Drogba. Rio de Janeiro wins right to stage 2016 Olympic Games
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee announced Friday. It is the first time South America would host an Olympics event. The city has budgeted $14.4 billion to the effort, the largest amount of any of the four finalists, according to IOC figures. The final vote was down to Rio and Madrid, Spain. In earlier voting, Chicago, Illinois, and then Tokyo, Japan, were eliminated from contention.
After the cities made their presentations to the IOC on Friday, the IOC members sat down to cast their votes in a secret ballot.
Ninety-seven of the IOC's 106 members are eligible to vote in the first round; seven must sit out that round because they represent one of the countries bidding for the Games.
A city must receive a majority of votes in order to win. If no city receives a majority, voting moves on to a second round, with the city receiving the lowest number of votes being eliminated, an IOC spokeswoman said. source

S.Africa to give Semenya heroine's welcome

"South Africa will give track champion Caster Semenya a heroine's welcome when she comes home this week, a minister said Sunday, after athletics officials subjected her to a controversial gender test."
"Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma spoke on the telephone Sunday with the 800-metre gold medallist whose boyish looks led to the test following her impressive performance at the world championships in Berlin."
"Caster deserves our support as a nation against the onslaught being waged against her," Dlamini Zuma said in a statement."
"The gender-testing debate has sparked outrage in the 18-year-old's home country, with the ruling party and its youth and women's wings saying the test smacked of racism and sexism."
